Speed up deliveries with 3d printing in trucks
3d printing will give companies a lot of new possibilities. For example in distribution. Amazon has already a vision of how 3d printing could transform how they produce and distribute products to their customers.
Amazon wants to speed up shipping. It is a goal of Amazon for years. With 3d printing in combination with trucks this might happen in the future. If it is the near future…well that is a good questions. It will still take a couple of years before their vision is realistic. Recently Amazon has filed several
patent applications for a new system which is able to print goods on-demand in “mobile manufacturing hubs” (read trucks). So this futuristic system could be able to create products on the streets towards customers.
The concept description and patent gives us insights in how the system could speed up deliveries in the near future. “Time delays between receiving an order and shipping the item to the customer may reduce customer satisfaction and
affect revenues generated,”. This is what Amazon stated in the documents. Some news sources like the Wall Street Journal came with a scenario in which mobile hubs were used to supple customers with replacement parts for their car or any other imaginable 3d printable part.
The patent isn’t yet awarded but it shows us how companies are working to reduce the time of ordering and delivering by the usage of innovative technologies and the combination of these technologies. What to think about a future where we see autonomous trucks outside cities printing products and drones delivering them to customers. Because remember that the same companies like Amazon and Alibaba and even Daimler Benz are also experimenting with delivery drones. But is isn’t only about drones and autonomous trucks. What to think about anticipatory delivery. Using data to deliver products before consumers even deliver it. In the beginning of 2014 Amazon filled a patent on this futuristic idea. The future of shopping is about to get disrupted.
