Daimler's self driving future truck

Daimler's self driving future truck

What will be the future of transport. We hear a lot about the self driving car but what about the self driving truck. Well Daimler claims it will be here by the year 2025?

On the A14 autobahn in the vicinity of Magdeburg, Daimler demonstrated its vision of the future. The Mercedes-Benz Future Truck 2025 gave us a glimpse of what to expect of the future of transport. The year 2025 is the year Daimler wants to introduce the truck. The truck is fully autonomous and so is capable of responding to traffic while driving down a freeway at speeds of up to 85 kilometers per hour. This futuristic truck will lead to more efficiency, and better safety and connectivity. It makes a more sustainable transport system possible which benefits the economy, society and consumers.

For now there is only one prototype of the autonomous truck. The biggest challenges are still the regulatory and legal ones. The increase in cost with the arrival of autonomous cars in still unclear. For personal cars they think it will be for about 10.000 dollars by the year 2020.

Daimler future truck retains a steering wheel. This if for safety. The steering wheel allows drivers to intervene for critical maneuvers. This is different from the recently introduced Google car. The Google car hasn’t a steering wheel of pedals.

Daimler is not the only one looking for the development of autonomous vehicles. Volvo also demonstrated their trucks which follow a truck leader controlled by a human.

The way we transport our stuff in the near future is about to be reset!
