How drones will change our cities (docu)

Drones…they have been around for quite a while now. But are these gadgets really going to change our cities and living environment?

According to the documentary below, drones are going to transform our world in the near future. The way we move, the way we receive our products and what our buildings will look like. There is no escaping the drone! Online architect magazine Dezeem made a documentary about these developments.

Delivery drones are here right now, you can go online and see them delivering objects. And I think the next step is going to be humans travelling by drones. Ten or fifteen years ago drones were immensely expensive, complex objects. Now you can buy them at a toy shop (designer Paul Priestman, chairman of PriestmanGoode) ."

At present all big brand names are in the race to win the development of the first successfulunmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). We already know several examples. All the world’s renowned transportation companies are engaged in creating smart applications that transform transport in cities. Drones and robots are much studied initiatives. In Europe all major cities are banning cars from their city centres. Along with our urban environment, our infrastructure and transport logistics change as well, which in turn will create new functions in the former. Buildings need to become accessible for drones and make room for drone fly zones.s.

I think you could well see the development of aerial highways," (architect Norman Foster, founder of Foster + Partners).

There are even people that assert that drones will have a similar impact as the internet.

Now that drones are in the hands of every person in the street, they're potentially as disruptive as the internet (Speculative architect Liam Young)

There are still many hurdles to overcome before drones become a common sight anytime soon. For example reliability, safety and efficiency. There is still a long way to go. At present, Extend Limits sees a lot of challenges regarding large scale deployment of drones. We will certainly keep track of research and new developments, but we do not share the extreme level of optimism of others.

It certainly is a very interesting documentary, including interviews with Norman Foster, Paul Priestman, Mark Dytham, Hans-Ulrich Obrist, Liam Young, Anab Jain, Marina Otero Verzier, Ammar Mirjan, Clemens Weisshaar en Ed Reeve, and others.
