Trend: Power to the people

Trend: Power to the people

In history, the ‘power’ switched from religion (the church) to governments to eventually big companies. The current transition makes that the ‘power’ ends up with (ad-hoc) and online communities.

Power structures with money and a (unique) access to knowledge and communication resources have dominated society for years. The money and knowledge gave these organizations appearance and access to power. But the powerful conglomerates of established and traditional companies are at the beginning of their decline. The 21st century demonstrates the vulnerability of the dominant and traditional power structures. They cannot dispute this pressure in traditional ways like with traditional mass communication anymore. The new media has the effect that society cannot be manipulated with biased information.

The voice of the people/customer becomes - partly because of this new media - more powerful than the power of money and access to mass communication resources. Unlimited access to knowledge is also a cause for the acceleration of the ‘power to the people’ trend. Big companies always pretended that they put the customer first. That was after all their reason for existence. But it never was the case. Companies could introduce new products and services with a lot of marketing power and PR-activities. But the impact and functioning of advertisements and PR-expressions is limiting. Eventually ad-hoc communities instead of conglomerates of organizations will control the markets.

Trend definition: Ad hoc communities of customers which share their influence towards organisations and governments using new technology and media.

Behoefte

Gevolg
