Use the crowd for the fastest route

The idea isn't new and there are more examples of it but still it is innovative. Well what is it? Use the crowds mobile phones to calculate the fastest route.

The principle behind the idea seems like the concept of social driving (Waze). Also this application uses the data from other travellers and their mobile devices to calculate the fastest route. This is also what 'Mobile Millenium' is about.

Mobile Millenium is part of the so called Progress project which is a project of Nokia and Lonely Planet. These two organisations are doing some great and inspiring projects together.

For more info about these projects see (website):The projects are:

  • Nokia data gathering (Brazil)
  • Nokia Tej (Gujarat)
  • Mobile learning institute (San Francisco)
  • PEIR (San Francisco)
  • Nokia Life tools (Maharashtra)

About the Mobile Millenium project. This project makes it possible to download an app for your mobile devices which connects you with the Mobile Millenium network. With the help of GPS and a routeplanner you will receive the most actual and targeted information for your route from other users.

UC Berkeley tested this system in 2008 and it was a big hit. Now it is tested and used in San Francisco. NavTeq is also involved in this project.
