How technology and clothes merge
Will 2015 be the year where we see the further fuse or merge of technology and clothes? Well something is for sure. Many clothing brands are working on it. Today we present Oakley and the future of sports and technology.
Oakley has started it’s Oakley Future Sport Project and it’s motto is to disrupt by design. In other words make existing sports more extreme or just create new extreme sports. This all by using technology in the designs of their clothes and sport materials. For the Future of sport project Oakley collaborates with professional snowboarder Scotty James and surfing dude Jack Robinson to create technology to give both athletes more possibilities in their sports.
Scotty James got his clothes integrated with the latest technology and so Oakley created the so called flying suit. The suit includes a pair of turbines at the back which enables the wearer to increase flying speed and so airtime. But the suit is also able to increase the speed of the snowboarder on the ground. The Flying Suit also contains accellerometers and cameras to track the movements and improvements of Scotty James.
Surfer Jack Robinson got a high tech surfing board. Tech firm Airbag Labs planned to give the surfers a shapeshifting board. This means a surfing board with aerographine which expands - contracts in response to electrical currents. The board also has retractable fins and so the futuristic design gives the surfer the ability to adjust his board’s shape and configuration according to conditions.
Oakley wants to be in the lead for the future of extreme sports and foresees a important role of new technologies enabling athletes to do more with their sports. All the designs and prototypes Oakley produces are not for sale but give us a glimpse of what is ahead of us. The future of sports and technology looks promising.
