De toekomst van journalistiek...citizen journalism?
What will the future of journalism look like? If we can believe the several initiatives like Digg and Ekodus and the success of blogs we must fear for the future of journalism as it exists today. We see a clear trend where citizen journalism becomes normal. So what will the future of journalism be? Recently a survey is done among the American public and here are some results:
- 72% is dissatisfied with the quality of American journalism today.
- 61% believes traditional journalism is out of touch with what Americans want from their news.
- 86% said they believe bloggers will play an important part in journalism’s future.
- 74% said citizen journalism will play a vital role in the future of journalism.
- 53% sees the rise of free Internet-based media pose the greatest opportunity to the future of professional journalism
- 76% said the Internet has had a positive impact on the overall quality of journalism.
Some very painfull results for American journalism. These results show something has to change in journalism. Of course we may not make the mistake to translate this to our situation in the Netherlands and journalism in our country. But of course we also may doubt sometimes the quality of journalism. What is the quality of Dutch journalism and will citizen journalism also be an option which puts traditional journalism into danger? Why pay for information and news if we can have this all for free and from several point of views in the digital world. When we all are connected 24x7 with the virtual world and information streams towards us newspapers and magazines will disappear?? I think journalism must really rethink its future or they will end the same way as the movie and music industry. What do you think?
We are now seeing mainstream acceptance of what we call the Power of Us - the value, credibility, and vital expression of citizen and collaborative media. We’ve arrived at a tipping point. A new definition of democratic media is emerging in our society.
