Cellscope, your mobile as a microscope

Working in a environment where you have hardly any technology beside a cellphone is hard for doctors. But maybe Cellscope will bring the solution.

Daniel Fletcher is behind the idea. A couple of years ago he challenged some students at the the University of California at Berkeley (UC Berkeley). He asked them to find a solution for the use of mobile phones to diagnose diseases. This specially for working in remote areas in developing countries. The students did a great job and with less than 100 dollars the transfered a cell phone into a low-cost, clinical-quality light microscope.

They call it Cellscope and now with funding of Microsoft a small team of students is working with Daniel Fletcher to refine the Cellscope. With CellScope in-home tests are easy to do and the results are send to their physicians or doctors. This all makes it possible to improve healthcare in developing countries.
