Autonomous boats in Amsterdam

MIT and AMS Institute Amsterdam are closely going to collaborate to trial autonomous boats in Amsterdam.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Metropolitan Solutions (AMS Institute) have launched the world’s first autonomous boats program for in densely populated areas such as the city of Amsterdam. Together with MIT and AMS are Delft University and Wageningen University also working on the Reboat program. It is a five years program with a budget of 25 million dollars.

Where should we think of when we are talking about the applications? Particular attention is given to the transport of goods on the canals/water. But also homes that are dynamic and can adapt to the desired function are being thought of. Home or an office on water as flexible platform. Also the environmental effects will be kept track on with smart sensors that belong to the project.

Will the future of infrastructure and mobility be on the water? One thing is certain. Autonomous and real estate as a platform is the new normal. You will see sailing the first autonomous boat in Amsterdam in 2017!
